Tuma

Tuma was once the greatest of all the cities of Vanil, and certainly the oldest at the time of its destruction. Its splendor at the height of its grandeur was such that none of the three largest Vanilli cities of North Vanil-Clensa, Kalimaar, or Portsport-even come close to the wealth and power it once wielded.

Tuma lay in the Tumish Steppes on the southern coast of Lake Tuma. The closest city belonging to any race to Tuma is Northtinker, about three weeks’ journey to the northeast; but the closest Vanilli settlement is Welwyn, some four to six weeks’ journey to the southeast and across the Tumish Wastes.

While native Tumish Vanilli had lived among the southern Clensaba since the Fourth Kingdom (and, indeed, the Clensaba shared the same religion until the rise of the Church of the Three), Tuma never fully integrated into Vanilli society as did the other cities. Its location and the prevalence of evil humanoids made constructing roads to Tuma a risky endeavor; and although Tuma lay on a waterway linked to the Western Ocean, the Tumish never exhibited any great talent in seafaring.

History

Tuma’s founding is used by historians to end Vanil’s Third Kingdom, and the city quickly gained wealth throughout later Kingdoms because it was largely free of the numerous conflicts that rocked the more southern portions of the continent. Tuma’s only threats came from the wandering orc and gnoll bands out on the Tumish Steppes, but Tumish military might was sufficient to ensure the city was never in any real danger, especially after a widespread cleansing that took place during the Seventh Kingdom.

Tuma’s grand history came to an end in the Eighth Kingdom when their crown prince Vala killed a member of the Esteemed Order of Barkeeps after accusing the man of shortchanging him on a drink. Soon thereafter, Clensa laid siege to the city and succeeded in occupying it, looting much of its wealth and forcing the vast majority of its population into the steppes in the process.

Partway through the Ninth Kingdom Clensa abandoned the city, now ruined and sacked. Some of the vagrant Tumish, namely the descendants of the High Priests to Gord, Ajah, and Grat, returned to the city and have carved out small areas of habitability within its walls; however, these areas of control are all in the western half of the city. The eastern half and central hill housing the Three Grand Temples were occupied by a wide variety of monstrous residents not long after Clensa’s departure. The overall lawlessness of the city nowadays makes it a popular haven for those fleeing justice, and rumors of some of Tuma’s undiscovered wealth still circulate and draw treasure seekers who hope to uncover some of these rumored troves.

Society

The city’s society, during its heyday, was centered around worship and respect for its three chief gods: Gord, Ajah, and Grat, as was the case among all Tumish. By and large the most powerful of the three forces was that of Gord, for those loyal to Gord served as Tuma’s police and protective force. Tumish royalty, while able to overturn decisions by the Church of Gord, by and large chose to remain out of Tumish politics.

Despite Tuma trading only minimally with other civilizations, the city was able to gain vast amounts of wealth by exploring and exploiting the vast mineral and precious metal deposits near the city. A vast discrepancy in wealth was evident between the lower and upper classes, however; and many of the poorest Tumish opted for a life roving the steppes over grinding out an existence in the city.
