Tinder

Tinder is a small village located near approximately the center of Portsport District, in the foothills of the Brokenspire Mountains. Though the settlement is currently tiny in population and size, it has a history stretching back until at least the Fourth Kingdom; it is where worship of Casada was strongest and where lay the vast caverns in which her followers lived, and where most of the treasures offered to her were consolidated. Once worship of Casada and her sisters declined starting in the Fifth Kingdom, the area around Tinder quickly depopulated, with many of the emigrants founding the city of Portsport to the south.

Tinder maintained a sheltered existence on the edge of true civilization until late in the Ninth Kingdom, when a pair of adventurers named Rhogan and Zelligar the Unknown constructed a castle over one of the cave complexes rumored to lead to the Casad Reaches, which lay approximately four days’ ride northwest of Tinder. Under the pair’s rule, the intermittent orc raids, bandit attacks, and dragon visits were a thing of the past, and Tinder reachieved some degree of prosperity, as it became a regular stop for merchant caravans heading towards Portsport from Clensa. Portsport began sending regular patrols along the road linking Tinder to the rest of the district and for the first time in years people could travel to and from Tinder in (relative) safety.

Recent Happenings

Around the year 1515, however, Zelligar and Rhogan vanished from their keep and have not been seen since; the only person remaining in the area who once lived at Qasqeston was Zelligar’s apprentice, Terrence Loren. A few years later, the raids resumed, with strange, new creatures the likes of which had never been seen also attacking. In the Vas Forest to the northeast, rumor began spreading of the dead rising from their graves and attacking anyone who dared travel through the area. While morale in the town (and the village’s existence itself) was maintained through Terrence’s formidable spellcasting abilities, in the summer of 1527 Terrence had a mental breakdown. While he would still come to the town’s defense when needed, starting in 1529 “Crazy Terry” spent most of his time alone in his house on the outskirts of town with his own apprentice, the gnome Beeble Brox.

These happenings, coupled with the lure of treasures that lay in the apparently-abandoned keep of Qasqeston, began luring adventurers of all stripes to the region. Many of the folk who entered the halls of Qasqeston never returned, with the adventuring groups Tinder’s Champions and The Crimson Skulls being notable exceptions. The Clensaba merchants maintained their visitation schedule despite Rhogan and Zelligar’s absence, for the adventurers provided a regular and lucrative customer base, though prices on many goods were increased to offset the cost of added security.

Late in 1534, however, Tinder’s Champions entered the bowels of Qasqeston and returned with an afflicted Rhogan, whom they had found in the winding tunnels leading to the Casad Reaches. Though he remained physically powerful, his mind had been shattered through some act and he remains a permanent resident at Tinder’s Church of the Three. In the early part of 1535, as Rhogan was still recovering, a roving bandit group assaulted the town. Though Tinder’s Champions helped the townsfolk rally and fight off the invaders, some of the members of that adventuring group had been killed and, perhaps the most devastating to the village’s collective well-being, Terrence and his house had been annihilated in a massive explosion as he fought off the raiders.

As of autumn of 1535, Rhogan was still recovering at the Church. Tinder, though still rebuilding from the bandit attack, continued its existence under the protection of The Crimson Skulls. Tinder’s Champions also still used the village as a base of operations as they continued to delve into the Casad Reaches.

Tinder’s Champions spent the winter of 1535 in Portsport and, upon returning in the spring of 1536, were informed that Rhogan had fully recovered and reclaimed Qasqueston. While Qasqueston is their new base of operations, they still visit Tinder to get supplies and whatnot.
